Films and TV series have long been among the most popular genres for Czech audiences, regardless of whether they watch traditional television channels or prefer paid streaming services. In fact, Czechs across all age groups are increasingly combining various platforms, with movie and series content remaining at the forefront of their interests. A significant proportion of viewers do continue to favour local productions.

Movies and TV series have long ranked among the most-watched TV channels’ genres. According to the official TV viewership data, they account for 44% of the total audience share among viewers aged 15 and over. TV series, in particular, enjoy even greater popularity.[1]This type of content is among the most sought-after across all age groups – among both men and women,’ adds Michaela Suráková, Atmedia’s Managing Director. This is further reflected in the composition of the Czech television market, where movie and series channels account for more than 40% of all measured thematic Pay-TV channels.[2] These include channels such as AXN, AXN Black, AXN White, CANAL+ Action, CS Film, FilmBox, FilmBox Stars, and JOJ Cinema.

Czechs Do Gravitate Towards Local Productions

Local productions continue to dominate film and series television viewership, with Czech titles accounting for 42% of the total viewing time. This places them ahead of content from North America and other European countries.[3]Local films and series do also feature more prominently in the offer of film and series Pay-TV channels, which – just like streaming services – are accessible via Pay-TV operators,’ says Michaela Suráková. ‘For example, the most-watched movie on FilmBox Stars last year was the Bábovky comedy.’ Czech and Czechoslovak films have proven to be viewer favourites on FilmBox over the past year, with comedies like 2Bobule or Prvok, Šampón, Tečka a Karel attracting some strong audiences.[4] Meanwhile, CS Film, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, remains committed to showcasing exclusively Czech movie content.

Films and Series Also Lead the Way on Streaming Platforms

A similar pattern emerges on streaming platforms, where comedy, crime, action and adventure, family dramas, and sci-fi and fantasy titles rank among the most in-demand genres. ‘The popularity of individual genres varies across different streaming services. For example, sci-fi and fantasy content is most often sought out on global VOD platforms, while family films tend to be watched mainly on local services,’ explains Michaela Suráková, referring to the results of the atmedia index survey for the second half of last year.

Significant differences are also evident in the choice of content origin. Users of local platforms such as Oneplay (former Voyo) and Prima+ most often watch Czech films and series – including original productions created by these services. Around half of their users prefer local titles. ‘Local streaming services often build their offer around domestic productions, which serve as their main competitive advantage over global players,’ explains Michaela Suráková. Conversely, users of global VOD platforms such as Netflix, Max, or Disney+ are primarily interested in the original content of these services and in international titles. Approximately half of their users actively seek out original productions.

Czech Dubbing Prevails Even on Streaming Platforms

Regardless of the platform – be it television channels or streaming services – dubbing remains the preferred viewing option for Czech audiences. Two-thirds of users on paid VOD platforms opt for Czech-language dubbing, with original-language content accompanied by Czech subtitles coming in second. ‘While interest in original-language content with Czech subtitles is higher among younger viewers, dubbing still dominates across all age groups,’ notes Michaela Suráková. ‘Czechs are used to dubbing and expect it – not only on television channels but also on streaming services.

Nearly Half of Czechs Now Use Streaming Services

In the second half of last year, 47% of Czechs aged 15 to 69 were using at least one paid VOD service. On average, they subscribed to two different services simultaneously. The top five most-used platforms on the Czech market have long included Netflix, Oneplay (former Voyo), Max, Disney+, and Prima+. These are followed, at a distance, by Amazon Prime Video, SkyShowtime, CANAL+, and Apple TV+.

Despite the rise of new platforms, traditional television broadcasting remains the most widespread way of consuming video content. Television content is watched by 92% of Czech households.[5] Each day, 68% of viewers aged 15 and over turn on their television, spending an average of 3 hours and 36 minutes in front of their screen.[6]

atmedia index

The research for Atmedia, the media representative for thematic television channels, was conducted by the research agency ResSOLUTION using the CAWI method. A total of 4,029 respondents from the Czech National Panel (an online population aged 15–69) participated in the survey. Data collection took place in two waves during the third and fourth quarters of 2024 (4th – 23rd October 2024 and 2nd – 21st January 2025). Atmedia introduced the atmedia index in mid-2021. It provides television channels, media agencies, and other interested parties with comprehensive data, insights, and information in two key areas: (1) the use of paid and free-to-air television, and (2) the use of paid video-on-demand (VOD) services.
